Three-day anniversary party attracts 1,750 staff

Event Public Bank Berhad’s 43rd Anniversary Party
Venue Hotel Equatorial Penang
Group size 1,750
Date June 5-7

The brief
The Public Bank Berhad Anniversary is an annual event that brings together the employees of one of Asia’s most renowned banks. This year was the bank’s 43rd anniversary. Hotel Equatorial Penang had to cater for 1,750 bank employees over the weekend.

Challenges
The biggest challenge was organising the anniversary dinner in the Matahari Ballroom. The venue had to accommodate 1,750 guests, a ten-metre-wide stage, 160 tables and an aisle wide enough to have a one-metre-wide carriage pass along it. With the large number of guests, restricted space, a very meticulous organiser and limited manpower, coordination had to be precise and all activities conducted on schedule.

There were some minor hiccups during the night due to miscommunication. However, the experienced banquet and conventions team at the Hotel Equatorial, ensured that the three-day event was a success at the end of it all.

Execution
The employees of Public Bank Berhad checked into more than 400 rooms over a two-day period prior to the event. Arrivals were staggered and organised. The Welcome Reception was held on June 5 in the hotel lobby, with cocktails and Lion Dance performances to welcome the arrival of the bank’s dignitaries. During the short reception, employees of Public Bank performed traditional dances and a cheerleading ceremony to begin the three-day celebration.

Other highlights of the event were the Beauty Pageant and Fancy Dress competition – an annual tradition for the group. This involved a wide range of costumes including Aliens, Predators and robots, which were all showcased and judged. The theme dinner and awards ceremony were held at the hotel’s Matahari Ballroom.

Comment
Khoo Gaik Hong, regional manager and organiser for the anniversary event, says: “Everything went well and our staff went home with fond
memories of the three-day event. We had a great time planning and finally seeing our ideas all come to life during the event. The end result was simply fantastic.”
