SingEx Holdings chief executive Aloysius Arlando has been appointed president of the International Association of Convention Centre (AIPC), announced this week during the AIPC 2017 General Assembly at ICC Sydney.

Arlando, who become the first Asian representative to be elected to the AIPC Board of Directors in 2012, takes the helm as Geoff Donaghy steps down after a successful four-year term as president.

AIPC represents a global network of more than 180 of the world’s leading convention centres across 59 countries. While membership is traditionally grounded in Europe, new members that have joined the association in the last 12 months are largely from Asia. These include Bangkok’s IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center, AsiaWorld Expo in Hong Kong, and Balai Sidang Jakarta Convention Center.

Based in Singapore, Arlando hopes to bring Asia to the fore and strengthen the association’s presence in the APAC region.

Speaking to CEI Asia, Arlando says he will focus on driving membership in key markets across Asia and Latin America.

“I’m working to ensure that we can enrich the composition of AIPC with a nice mosaic of convention centres,” he says.

“Europe is a very strong base for AIPC and provides a wellspring of innovation and best practice, which can be applied in other regions. However knowledge sharing is a two-way street and as centres in Asia adapt, new innovations will surface and these can then be shared with members in Europe and the U.S.”

Arlando says his key priorities include professional development and establishing a regional platform to engage with current and potential members.

“Establishing a regional presence will be important as we adapt collective wisdom to regional or market-specific circumstances. This will come in the form of more intimate networking events, discussion groups and focused summits.

“We recognise, across the board and our members, how common our challenges are. No one is excluded from the current geopolitical shifts and the many other policies and surprises we will likely face in the next few years... so we can leverage the wonderful network and collective wisdom we have within association.”

SingEx Holdings is a business event organiser and venue manager of the Singapore EXPO Convention and Exhibition Centre, which is a long-standing member of AIPC.
