New entrants dominate reader votes
1 MCI Group2 Pacific World 3 Singapore Exhibition Services Two new names appear on the leader board this year, most notably MCI Group taking first place with almost a quarter of reader votes. Last year’s winner, Pacific World, moves to second place, while another new name, Singapore Exhibition Services (SES), is in third place. MCI Group is a relative newcomer to Asia, having established its first regional office in Singapore in 2006. Offices in Mumbai (2007), New Delhi and Bangalore (2008); Hong Kong (2008); Tokyo (2008); Shanghai (2006) and Beijing (2009) have since followed. The company’s Asia Pacific president, Robin Lokerman, says that although 2009 was a flat year globally, Asian business increased by 22 per cent. He puts this down to long-term client relationships, strong supplier links and consistency. “We are working hard to ensure each office offers the same experience to every client. This means further integration of processes and systems and a strong focus on staff learning and development,” he says. Major events for MCI last year include the Million Dollar Round Table in Beijing and Sibos 2009 in Hong Kong. Among this year’s expected highlights is the World Congress of Cardiology, which will bring 20,000 delegates to Beijing in June. MCI is also a leader in the sustainability arena and works to involve others and share its experiences through training, events and its online resources. Pacific World has remained a trusted player in the region and now operates from 18 offices across eight countries.Regional general manager in Hong Kong Peggy Lau says last year was a special one. “Whatever events companies held, it was low-key and often downsized. There was business still out there, people just weren’t talking about it.” Third-placed SES has been busy organising some of Asia’s largest conferences and exhibitions. These include BroadcastAsia 2009 and CommunicAsia2009, the region’s largest media and information communication trade event, attracting nearly 55,000 professionals from more than 100 countries. “It has been a difficult 15 months,” says chief executive Stephen Tan. “We had to commit more resources to our regional programmes to maintain the size and level of multinational participation in the events.” Strong results followed with OSEA2008, held in December, achieving its best performance to date. The event grew by 80 per cent and trade visitors from the oil and gas industry increased by 47 per cent. ![]()
