MCI Group's global approach

Leading multinational events agency pioneers green role

The meetings and incentives industry is changing, and some say not a moment too soon. Being one of the more wasteful industries – any opportunity event organisers and suppliers have to reduce their impact on the environment is significant. So, as the world becomes greener and the events industry becomes more sustainable, will Asia be able to compete?

International events company MCI is a pioneer of green and sustainable practices. For the last few years, the organisation has been developing the concept of green meetings.

In April last year, MCI’s Sustainability Services business unit was rolled out across the world in an effort to grow the agency’s commitment to ‘green’ meetings. Following its collaboration with the Estoril Congress Center in Lisbon, Portugal to define and implement the venue’s sustainability policy, MCI will expand its consultancy offering to venues and suppliers around the world.

MCI sustainability director Guy Bigwood says: “There are so many environmental consultancies, but none truly understand the events industry. We have an expert team and are working with actual processes that can be implemented, including companies such as Green Globe and policies like BS8901.

The Estoril project was the first time MCI had concentrated our efforts on a venue provider and, as such, it is a further move towards sustainability in the industry. One of the hurdles we faced as an agency was finding suppliers to meet our green needs, so we spent a lot of time offering free consultancy for venues and then realised there was a business opportunity here.”
