InterContinental Hong Kong demonstrates best practice

InterContinental Hong Kong is the group’s flagship property in Asia and also leads its sustainability efforts. It was the first hotel in the city to achieve Silver Certification.

Green direction…
The hotel’s sustainability team chose to pursue Green Globe certification because of its relevance to the tourism and events market. “A key benefit of the Green Globe programme is the ability to benchmark our environmental performance indicators against industry best practices,” says Nicholas Mak, director of engineering and chairman of the hotel’s Green Globe Committee

Areas of focus…
To achieve Silver Certification, the hotel focused on four main areas where its staff had to take action in order to comply with Green Globe standards: energy and water conservation; harmful substances management, solid waste management and green purchasing. To implement changes the hotel formed a Green Globe Committee from representatives of major departments, who then recruited 'Green Globe Ambassadors' to help ensure the correct procedures were followed.

New initiatives…
As part of the brand’s new InterContinental Meetings offer, the Hong Kong property can arrange a CSR delegate experience with one of its community service partners. These include Po Leung Kuk, a wellestablished organisation that operates 200 units throughout the city. Delegates can become involved by serving meals, organising activities or assisting with facilities upkeep.
