About Japan
Japan is located in the North Pacific, off the coast of Russia and the Korean peninsula. It consists of four main islands and more than 4,000 smaller islands.

With its three national holidays, the period from April 29 to May 6 is known as Golden Week. Banks and public offices are closed. Millions of
Japanese take the whole week off to travel, so be prepared for extreme crowding on trains and in hotels during this time. Two other busy periods are August 13-16 and New Year.

Some 60 major airlines serve Narita International Airport, 67.5 km east of Tokyo, while Haneda Airport serves mostly domestic flights. In Tokyo, people live by the elaborate and efficient network of trains and ubways. Taxi fares are around $6 for the first two km and rise steeply thereafter.
