About Auckland
Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and the site of the major international airport of the country. Auckland is known as the "City of Sails" which looks its best from the water, the high-rise downtown dominated by the Skytower and backed by the low, grassy humps of some of the fifty-odd extinct volcanoes that ring the Waitemata Harbour.

Beyond the central business district it is a low-slung suburban city, rarely rising above two storeys and characterized by prim wooden villas surrounded by substantial gardens, spreading off into the distance. It is one of the least densely populated cities in the world, occupying twice the area of London and yet home to barely a million inhabitants.

Auckland is often regarded very much as a transit place, as many visitors only stay long enough for a quick zip around the smattering of key sights before moving on to far less metropolitan locales.
