About Chiangmai
Founded in 1296 by King Mengrai as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Mai is the second largest city of Thailand. Chiang Mai has had a long and mostly independent history, which has to a large extent preserved a most distinct Thai culture. Beyond the city, the province offers some of the most picturesque scenery in the whole kingdom, and is one of the forested mountains including Thailand’s highest peak at Doi Intanon.

The city stands strategically on the Ping River, which threads its way through the mountainous regions of Myanmar & northern Thailand, before slowing down through the central plains & eventually merging with the Chao Phraya River which flows through the centre of Bangkok & eventually out into the Gulf of Thailand.

Despite being a reasonably modern city, Chiang Mai has managed to keep its centuries old History and Culture pretty much intact. Although English is spoken in hotels and most Restaurants to accommodate tourists, local folks generally speak "Kham Muang" which is the northern Thai or Lanna dialect.

Travellers interested in a country’s culture will definitely find Chiang Mai a cultural haven because it is the most culturally significant city in Northern Thailand.
