Hotel upgrades refresh Singapore's offering

by Gerardine Donough-Tan    4-Mar-10, 09:36
Major renovations and further plans at leading hotels

New hotels and extended wings will boost Singapore’s hotel room inventory this year, mainly in the luxury price bracket. Two new integrated resorts will add nearly 4,000 rooms to Singapore’s current tally of 44,000.

The recently rejuvenated Orchard Road is restaking its claim as a prime tourist belt with the opening of four new malls and extensive revamps at two hotels: Meritus Mandarin Singapore and Concorde Hotel Singapore.

Meritus Mandarin Singapore’s entrance, lobby and food and drink outlets have been relocated, and each block renamed. The South Tower on Orchard Link is now the Main Tower, while the front block on Orchard Road is now known as the Orchard Tower. The lobby and reception counter are on level 5, where four new restaurants and bars are also located. Its 240 sqm function room, the Mandarin Suite, seats 140 people theatre style.

Orchard Tower has six meeting rooms on level 6 and the Mandarin Court has moved to level 35. With the existing 1,200 capacity pillarless Mandarin Ballroom and eighth-floor meeting rooms in the Main Tower, planners have many options to choose from.

MAJOR RENOVATION
Concorde Hotel Singapore, formerly Le Meridien, has completed the first phase of its US$6 million renovation with a new lobby, restaurants and bars, and 125 premier rooms, suites and lounges. The refurbishment will be completed in the third quarter of 2010.

Despite extensive refurbishment and complimentary privileges for premier club guests, Concorde, with 407 rooms and 11 function areas, is positioning itself as a four-star business hotel for the corporate market.

Royal Plaza on Scotts has added seven corporate suites. Each 96 sqm suite has a bedroom with adjoining meeting space, complete with long table, built-in projection screen and complimentary maxi-bar. It also features a Nespresso machine and Wii station.

NEW SPACES
Grand Hyatt Singapore’s function rooms on the mezzanine level are currently under renovation and will reopen this July as an art deco-style function space, The Gallery.

In the CBD, Swissotel, The Stamford and Fairmont Singapore were upgraded during 2009. The first phase of Raffles City Convention Centre’s renovation saw improvements to the Stamford Ballroom, VIP Lounge, meeting rooms and foyers, including enhanced soundproofing for the Stamford Ballroom. The second phase is underway, with an executive conference centre scheduled for completion in April.

Diagonally opposite Raffles City, the new wing of Carlton Hotel Singapore is scheduled to be ready in the second half of this year. This will add about 300 rooms to the city centre.
