New facility leads Darwin's events drive

Darwin Convention Centre is in the heart of the new Darwin Waterfront Precinct. The world-class multipurpose facility opened in June 2008 and has seating for up to 1,500 delegates and 4,000 sqm of exhibition space.

Where is it?
The convention centre is set on the waterfront at the edge of the CBD. It is also a 15-minute drive from Darwin airport. Cruise ships leave from the nearby terminal. Major hotels are within walking distance, including the new Medina Grand Darwin and the Vibe Hotel, which were also part of the US$1 billion waterfront development. The centre is linked to Darwin city centre and surrounding hotels by a skywalk.

What events has it hosted?
Darwin Convention Centre has hosted more than 200 events for nearly 60,000 people. In November it hosted a Bridal Expo, a Wine Expo and the Flight Centre Travel Expo.

Next year, 350 delegates will attend the Nursery and Garden Industry Australia National Conference in April, and 700 will attend the Australasian College of Dermatologists 43rd Annual Scientific Meeting in May. In 2011, the convention centre will host 1,500 delegates at Count Financial’s 26th Annual Financial Planning Conference.

What else is coming up?
Development is continuing on the 25-hectare waterfront precinct, with outdoor restaurants and cafés, a luxury spa, parklands and a 4,000 sqm wave lagoon already in place. Retail outlets, a signature restaurant and residential apartments will follow soon.
