Supermarket chain adds CSR to annual conference

Event Ritchies Supermarkets annual conference
Destination Cairns, Australia
Company Big Stick Adventures
Delegates 180
Date September 28, 2009

The brief
Ritchies Supermarkets wanted a unique teambuilding experience for its annual staff and suppliers’ conference that would showcase the Cairns region, and incorporate the company’s focus on benefiting the community.

Big Stick Adventures created an itinerary themed ‘Rogaining for the Environment’, and the client chose both helicopter and scooter transportation to create the optimal adventure experience. Rogaining is a sport where teams navigate between targets within a set amount of time.

Challenges
The logistics of flying 180 people to a secluded beach and back within the allocated timeframe, and arranging scooter hire at staggered times, had to be planned in detail. The helicopter pilots were given a strict timetable and guests were made aware of the flight schedule so everyone could take part in the activities on offer.

Execution
To incorporate the CSR element, Big Stick devised a challenge whereby participants earned eco-credits. The total number of credits would be translated to the number of trees Ritchies would plant on behalf of its attendees.

Teams were given aerial photographs, maps, compasses and coordinates to reach city checkpoints and complete challenges within a set timeframe, with the objective of earning the highest number of eco-credits. The challenge resulted in the planting of 300 trees in a priority revegetation site.

Rogaining was chosen so that delegates could opt in or out of other activities, with the aim of providing something for everyone. Other activities included a 25-minute helicopter ride to a secret beach location for a 30-minute stopover, where guests could take part in beach games before chilling out under the palm trees or taking a dip in the sea.

Comment
Big Stick’s Brett Hollis says the client was very happy. “That night at dinner the guests were raving about their different experiences around Cairns. The rogaining proved to be successful and the helicopter rides left a memorable impression. The client was also satisfied that the CSR element was well received.”
