The brief
Hurun Report is a luxury publishing group based in Shanghai, China, comprising a monthly magazine and an events division targeting China’s wealthy elite.

The group saw the 2009 China International Boat Show as an opportunity to bring together key industry figures and premium yacht buyers to recognise the huge infrastructure development in recent years.

Challenges
“The most difficult part was to ensure the right people attended,” says Rupert Hoogewerf, founder and publisher of the Hurun Report. “China’s yachting community is rarely able to gather in one city at a time so the boat show represented the perfect opportunity.”

Execution
“We chose a Caribbean theme to highlight the yachting lifestyle,” says Hoogewerf.

Dewar’s Whiskey provided premium whiskey for the event and security guards were positioned throughout the club to add more excitement.

An awards ceremony recognised the Top Twenty Pioneers of China’s fledgling marina industry, and with most recipients currently having marinas under construction. After the cocktails, Hurun Report hosted 25 VIP guests on a cruise along the Huangpu River, which runs through Shanghai.

“Shanghai’s weather is at its best in mid-April and our guests enjoyed champagne while taking in the evening sights,” says Hoogewerf. “We worked with a local dealer on sourcing a Pershing performance yacht and an Azimut cruising yacht. Both were outstanding vessels of around 60 feet.”

Comment
“We chose 881 Club as it is a contemporary space within walking distance of the boat show, and is run by South Beauty Restaurants – one of the leading restaurant groups in China,” says Hoogewerf. “These marina pioneers represent the cream of China’s fast-growing yachting lifestyle and we were delighted to bring China’s wealthy elite together with the marinas.”
