Seoul will host about 100 large-scale international conferences between 2012 and 2018, the city announced.

Events include the 2016 General Session of the International Association for Dental Research that is expected to attract more than 10,000 participants to Seoul.

The events are estimated to bring over US$1.15 billion to the capital, with $72 million of that coming from events brought in with help from Seoul Convention Bureau, and which will attract some 30,000 international delegates.

The success stems partly from the bureau’s extensive support system, from assistance with site visits to bidding clinics that help local organisers put together proposals in English.

Seoul has ample experience in staging large events, and hosted the World Congress of Dermatology and its 15,000 delegates last May. At the end of 2011, the South Korean capital ranked fifth in the Union of International Associations’ list of the most popular cities in the world for meetings.
