MACAU The Venetian Macao has partnered with third-party sustainability auditor, EarthCheck, to reduce its environmental footprint and demonstrate best practices in sustainable operations.
This is no small commitment – the Venetian is the sixth-largest building in the world, employs more than 15,000 staff and receives over 100,000 visitors each day.
“Our vision is to be a leader in sustainability in our marketplace,” said Mike Naylor, vice president of facilities management, The Venetian Macao. “EarthCheck allows us to effectively measure our sustainability outcomes against an industry recognised baseline and best practice levels, and to take proactive measures to minimise our carbon footprint.”
The company has opened up multiple sectors to be benchmarked by EarthCheck including its hotel, conferencing areas, exhibition space and retail outlets. This will enable the team to report carbon per guest night or square metre and water use per visitor.
With plans to operate multiple interconnected, integrated resorts, containing over 20,000 hotel rooms, approximately 150,000 sqm of MICE space, over 186,000 sqm of retail, six theatres and other amenities, the task of reducing the use of energy, waste and water makes good business sense.
The EarthCheck certification programme is independently audited and helps venues meet the environmental requirements associated with preferred supplier agreements.
