The brief
Amway Indonesia holds its Special Leadership Seminar in a new destination each year. Each time the organiser must top previous years’ events with an exciting programme so the achievers who attend feel special and rewarded.

Challenges
The group only had a short time in each destination before having to reboard the ship. This meant Discovery Overland had to compress both a Penang and Phuket experience into a matter of hours. The size of the group also required special arrangements so they would not have issues with traffic or overcrowding at smaller venues. Discovery Overland managing director Eric Ewe, says: “With eight large coaches we needed to plan five different routes for the city tour of Penang so the achievers would have an authentic experience and traffic wouldn’t be an issue.”

Execution
The Amway achievers flew to Singapore from several cities across Indonesia to board the cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Sea. Discovery Overland met them at the airport and each port to handle transfers and all activities.  “Despite the short time in Singapore, the group wanted to shop,” says Ewe. “So we scheduled three hours of shopping at VivoCity, a large mall near the Singapore Cruise Centre at Harbourfront.”

The city tour of Penang took in George Town highlights including Pinang Peranakan Mansion and Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, before reaching the grand ancestral home of Khoo Kongsi. The group assembled in the large courtyard between the main building and the traditional open-stage theatre facing it.

“We set-up special stalls in the houses around the courtyard so the group could have a full Penang experience in one place,” says Ewe. “We brought in the School of Hard Knocks from Kuala Lumpur to demonstrate pewter-smithing, local sellers offered Penang coffee and biscuits and special varieties of Durian were specially brought in.” The group then enjoyed a dinner of local Penang cuisine with entertainment from Indian, Malay and Chinese dancers. Penang Tourism provided goodie bags for the group.

On arrival in Phuket the group received a beachside welcome from traditional Thai dancers before unwinding at an open-air buffet. The city tour took in local sights as well as a visit to a Buddhist temple. In the evening, an exclusive performance of local show Fantasea was held an hour earlier to accommodate the group’s schedule.

Comment
“This incentive trip was for Amway Indonesia’s high achievers and the cruise worked well because the group could see three countries with ease,” says Ewe. “Everyone appreciated the trip very much and gave everyone something to talk about, which also motivates their sales agents for the year ahead.”
