Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) now hosts sustainable banquets using a simple philosophy accessible through its new online resources. CEI Asia looks at the benefits for event planners:
Catering a mega event can carry a huge carbon footprint if not managed sustainably. MCEC minimises this by sourcing local and homegrown produce. MCEC’s commitment is outlined in M Food and Wine, an online resource within its website. The site posts case studies plus an interactive dining menu with videos for event planners to download and decide what sort of food and drink to select for any size event.
Its Farm to Fork blog gives planners an even better sense of MCEC’s green philosophy and their preferred suppliers. These resources accompany a host of environmentally friendly initiatives MCEC has introduced since 2008. It is the only convention and exhibition venue in Australia that is both Green Globe and Waste Wise-certified.
Supporting sustainability
With the implications of unsustainable use of fossil fuels well documented, it is responsible to switch to earth-friendly alternatives when made available. This includes avoiding freighted goods to reduce energy use and carbon emissions.
At MCEC, food is sourced from local farmers who support sustainable crop growing and rearing of farm animals. For example, only eggs from free-range chicken are used. Chefs also deal with artisan cheese producers and buy from fresh seafood and premium beef suppliers in the region.
You will not be able to find house wine on the menu. Instead, there is a list of wines from vineyards around the state designed to suit varying tastes and budgets.
MCEC food and beverage manager Frank Burger, says: “The new M Food and Wine micro-site is a valuable resource for event planners, delegates and visitors to the MCEC providing a unique insight into our food and wine philosophy.”
Business benefit
Holding an event at MCEC and participating in their green operations may fit well into organisers’ own corporate and social responsibility commitments. By avoiding excessive carbon emissions while minimising waste, conserving water, recycling and supporting local trade, this can bring significant operational cost savings.
Together with the reputation of the quality of food served by MCEC, which was recently awarded Best Achievement in Catering at the 2010 Australian Event Awards, taking your event to a green venue makes good business sense.
