KUCHING Sarawak Convention Bureau has won its bids to host the 13th International Conference on Urban Drainage in 2014 and the 15th International Peat Congress in 2016 (IPC2016).

ICUD is expected to attract 1,000 delegates to Kuching, while the five-day IPC2016 will attract 700 delegates and generate more than US$700,000 for the local hospitality and tourism sector.

The bureau worked closely with the Malaysian Peat Society (MPS) on the bid for IPC2016. Dato James Dawos Mamit, president of MPS and chairman of IPC2016, said: “We are pleased to win this bid for Malaysia, especially since it’s the first time this prestigious convention will be held outside Europe and North America.”

Sarawak won the bid at the Society’s annual assembly, where organisers showed interest in holding the event closer to the tropical peat swamp forests of Southeast Asia.
