The brief
The telemarketing department of PCA Life Insurance wanted to boost employee morale by rewarding its top-performing sales staff with a trip to a destination of their choice. Most of them chose Australia, as few had been there before.
To qualify for the trip, staff had to pass a six-month performance threshold and rank among the top 80 team members, which resulted in a competitive atmosphere in the department.
Challenges
May Wu, senior manager of the telemarketing department, says transportation was the biggest logistical problem. “We had 125 people, which meant having to split them into two groups to get them to Sydney. One group flew direct from Taipei, while the others went via Hong Kong,” she says.
Execution
Children were brought on the six-day trip and therefore events were mostly family-oriented, with trips to well-known landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, Blue Mountains National Park and Taronga Zoo.
The highlight was a yacht race especially arranged for PCA as a teambuilding exercise. Each yacht was managed by a qualified captain who taught PCA staff how to control the sails.
“It was really spectacular to see 10 yachts set-off simultaneously at the start,” says Liao Yuan Ru, president –telemarketing. “The sailors played different roles and learned how to work together to ensure their yachts passed the finish line on the harbour.”
Another memorable event was the Sunset Cruise Awards Dinner on the Sydney Showboat. Delegates enjoyed a feast of fresh Australian seafood while being entertained by a band and singers as they sailed around Sydney Harbour. The employees were also recognised for their efforts with awards from senior executives and the CEO of PCA Life Insurance.
Comment
“Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves during the whole trip,” says Wu. “It wasn’t much trouble for us to get around, as there are so many overseas Chinese living in Sydney to ask directions in Mandarin. “The weather was perfect and we tried to create a memorable trip. In the end I think that was successfully achieved.”
