SYDNEY The New South Wales government is to proceed with a master plan to upgrade and expand conference and exhibition facilities in the city.

Jon Hutchison, Business Events Sydney CEO, said: “Global competition for business events is extremely fierce, which is why it’s important for Sydney to demonstrate its commitment as a leading and long-term destination for business events.”

The government proposal reccommends the Sydney Showground facilities in the city's west be expanded to accommodate domestic exhibitions previously held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Hutchison added: “We have 105 events already booked up until 2017, representing an estimated US$570 million for the city.”

The Lions Club International Convention in July and Amway China event in 2011 are among the big events that will hit the city in the next 12 months.
