Coex has been chosen to host the Business for the Environment Summit and Champions of the Earth Awards in April 2010. The centre lists its green credentials here:

Why is Coex the host venue?
Coex is a testing ground for alternative energy sources, like LED lights, hydrogen-powered batteries and solar panels. The Business for the Environment Summit in 2010 will be solely powered by renewable energy as the first event of its kind. Coex will use this opportunity to learn more about existing green technologies and to take another step towards sustainability.

The Business for the Environment Summit will coincide with Earth Day on April 22. Korea’s Ministry of Environment and the UN Environment Program have partnered to raise awareness in the international community with regards to climate change.

What has Coex done to deserve this event?
Coex has been able to reduce its carbon footprint in recent years by sticking to sustainable practices. In 2008 the centre put together a green task force that initiated its Green Campaign. The team produced a manual that sets green standards for facility management at Coex, for trade show organisers and for Coex employees.

Coex also developed an ecofriendly manual for professional conference organisers to help them with planning, preparation, show management and post-show. PCOs are also encouraged to discuss the merits of of the manual with exhibitors and organisers.

Additionally, Coex increased the number of green spaces around the complex, built a rooftop garden and closely monitors energy consumption with its Building Energy Management System (BeMS), developed in-house.

What are the specifics?
Coex has replaced all lights in its four exhibition halls, the car park, basement and all emergency lights with LED energy-saving bulbs. The venue also expanded its water-recycling programme and plans to make use of the strong wind between Asem Tower and the Coex Center Building.

It will install a wind generator between the two buildings to use as a new source of energy.
