Venue Dusit Thani, Pattaya, Thailand
Delegates 80
Date February 6-8
The brief
The annual SCA Sales Meeting gathers operation staff and sales engineers from eight countries to review performance, successes and achievements, as well as to plan for the year ahead. Teambuilding activities serve as a prelude to sales meetings.
Challenges
The company has many longterm employees who had already experienced annual meetings with integrated teambuilding games at a beach resort. There were also many employees who were meeting their colleagues for the first time.
After discussing this with the hotel’s sales team, the Sumitomo organising committee decided to include some icebreaker games and two teambuilding activities organised by the hotel’s teambuilding staff. These were held on the beachfront.
Execution
Delegates first had to fly into Bangkok from around Asia. The road transfer to Pattaya then took 90 minutes. The earlier arrivals explored Pattaya’s attractions including shopping and dining. Everyone gathered at 3pm in the hotel’s gardens and began a series of icebreaker games designed to overcome initial shyness and inhibitions.
The first teambuilding activity, ‘Get Me Out of the Web’, involved critical decision-making as a team. Ten people assisted another ten in crossing from one point to another without touching the ground. This was followed by ‘Superman Race’, which had teams dressing up as superheroes and competing in a series of races. Several members also tried out the confidence-building courses.
On the final day an al fresco dinner was held by the pool with a surprise fireworks display from around the bay.
Comment
“The participants were impressed with the accommodation and facilities at Dusit Thani Pattaya,” says Ronny Poon, director of Sumitomo (SHI) Cyclo Drive Asia Pacific. “The service was great and the staff were friendly. It certainly helped us achieve our meeting objectives while giving it enough spice even for the most seasoned travellers.”
