What impact has the Darwin Convention Centre had on the city?
Since the opening of the Centre in mid- 2008, Darwin has experienced incredible market support with many planners indicating that the centre provided the catalyst and, in some cases, was the primary reason for them bringing their groups to the Territory. The Centre has now hosted more than 200 events, generating an attendance of close to 60,000 people.
What about off-site events?
World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park is popular and even travelling as far afield as the Tiwi Islands to the north and in the south, to iconic Uluru and the spectacular outback desert regions.
In Darwin itself, the unique Deckchair Cinema, Mindil Beach Sunset Market, Crocosaurus Cove as well as the Territory Wildlife Park have all hosted large groups as part of conference social programmes.
Are you seeing results from the Asian market to date?
A multinational insurance company recently brought a roundtable conference with delegates from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. Events such as next year’s Australasian Fire Authorities Conference have identified that a Top End meeting opens up opportunities for post-event touring to places like Vietnam and Bali.
We’re also aware of cases where technical tours have headed over to Singapore. This process can be a two-way street; the Territory is a great option for a satellite meeting or post-touring option.
